Calangute Beach in Goa

Calangute, one of Goa’s most popular beach destinations, may soon see new regulations to manage the influx of tourists and maintain its pristine condition. The village panchayat of Calangute has proposed introducing an entry fee for visitors who do not have a prior hotel booking. This move aims to control overcrowding and curb activities that have been tarnishing the village’s reputation.

Under the proposed plan, checkpoints will be established on roads leading to Calangute, ensuring that only those with confirmed accommodations or willing to pay the nominal fee can enter. This measure comes in response to increasing issues with day-trippers who often contribute to littering and disturbances. The panchayat hopes that these changes will deter problematic behavior and enhance the overall experience for genuine tourists.

Joseph Sequeira, the Sarpanch of Calangute, mentioned that these steps are crucial to address the recent surge in illegal activities, including touting and unruly behavior. He stressed that ensuring visitors have planned accommodations will not only improve security but also uphold the village’s standards. The draft resolution has been forwarded to higher authorities for approval. If implemented, this policy could set a precedent for other tourist-heavy areas facing similar challenges.
