Skinny jeans: The two words that trigger uneasy feelings in me and immediately send me back to the 2010s. They are tight against the skin, quite uncomfortable and definitely not the best choice for summer. Anyone who feels the same can rest assured: This summer there are plenty of other denim styles that will be trendier than the skin-tight classic. Natalie Portman shows us which style we should go for instead, and rejoice, it’s the complete opposite of skinny jeans.
Natalie Portman plays a journalist who devotes herself to two unsolved murders in her latest film Lady in the Lake. On her promotional tour, however, she’s not solving murders but the mystery of the best denim to wear this summer, and it’s safe to say, it’s wide-legged jeans. Her denim-du-jour are characterised by the patch pockets and a button-up placket, which give the trousers a vintage twist. The Miss Dior ambassador pairs them with a white, knitted three-quarter length top, a black pair of square-toed pumps, a Dior tote bag and black sunglasses—trés chic!
Even if some fashionistas are already predicting a comeback for skinny jeans, we’re partial to wide-legged jeans, which are not only much more comfortable, but also super summery. The fact that the fabric is not tight around the legs and hem prevents heat from building up in them. Wide-legged jeans in all kinds of washes should definitely have a place in our summer repertoire. We are currently seeing Natalie Portman’s version with patch pockets in many of our favourite stores’ collections.
Natalie Portman’s outfit is a lesson in a timeless fashion formula: Jeans and a white top. It’s a simple summer outfit that can be diversified with accessories or textures. If, like Natalie Portman, we opt for a top of a slightly different material to cotton, like knit or linen, for example, the look immediately becomes more elevated. Then, of course, there are the shoes. With our favourite trainers we’d make a casual, everyday look, but with a pair of ballerinas or heels, it’ll take on a grown-up, elegant office feel. That’s the versatile appeal of the wide-legged jeans.
