Severe rains swept away a 50-metre patch of NH-2 at Phesama village in Kohima district, cutting off key transportation between Nagaland and Manipur. Over a hundred goods-laden trucks bound for Manipur have been stranded on the jammed road since Sunday.Deputy chief minister TR Zeliang inspected the part of the collapsed highway, accompanied by officials from the Public Works Department and the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd (NHIDCL). He directed immediate measures to restore connectivity and instructed NHIDCL to establish an alternate route for stranded vehicles and goods transportation, news agency PTI reported.“This is the third major road collapse at this location since 2013. A permanent solution is long overdue,” Zeliang stated, revealing that he and chief minister Neiphiu Rio both have written to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways seeking approval for a proposed alternate route.District authorities have opened a one-way alternate route for light motor vehicles. The destruction extended across multiple districts. In Tuensang, landslides blocked roads in Phingjang ward and below Tuensang village, while a windstorm damaged an Anganwadi centre in Phir Ahir village under Longkhim sub-division.Kiphire district experienced extensive road blockages between Khongiri and Mimi villages. Agricultural fields in Moya and Pungro villages sustained significant damage, while Singrep village reported incidents of landslides. Despite the widespread destruction, no human casualties have been reported. Government authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant as monsoon conditions intensify, emphasising the critical need to prioritise public safety and property protection.
