‘My life’s mission’: Pelosi vows to keep Donald Trump out of White House – Times of India

TOI World Desk

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi made it clear that her primary objective is to prevent Donald Trump from regaining the presidency. Reflecting on the missed opportunity to disqualify him through Senate conviction after the January 6 Capitol insurrection, Pelosi blamed Senate Republicans for what she considers a failure to uphold justice.
“How can I say this in the nicest possible way: My goal in life was that man would never step in the White House again,” Pelosi said.
Pelosi expressed regret over the missed chance to disqualify Trump from holding future office. She said that if the Senate had convicted him on the impeachment charge related to the January 6, 2021 Capitol insurrection, it would have rendered him ineligible to seek the presidency again. Pelosi held the Senate Republican leadership responsible for this outcome, deeming it a shameful decision.
Despite no longer serving as House Speaker, Pelosi maintains significant influence within the Democratic Party and plays a crucial role in shaping its strategic decisions. Her advocacy for change led to President Joe Biden’s decision to withdraw from the race and endorse Vice President Kamala Harris as the party’s nominee, with Minnesota governor Tim Walz as her running mate.
Pelosi had previously cautioned Biden against engaging in debates with Trump, viewing him as a “snake-oil salesman” and believing it would be unwise to interact with him. Her guidance was part of a larger plan to bolster the Democratic ticket and secure the party’s success in the upcoming election. Pelosi believes that Biden’s decision to step aside will help preserve his legacy by avoiding a potentially unsuccessful campaign against Trump.
Known for her support of former House members, Pelosi recognizes their ability to effectively navigate the legislative process. While she has not publicly endorsed any specific vice-presidential candidate, she stresses the importance of selecting a partner who can assist Harris in governing effectively.
As Harris and Walz campaign across crucial swing states such as Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Michigan, Pelosi observes a growing enthusiasm among young voters, indicating a renewed energy within the Democratic Party. This shift is viewed as a promising sign for the Democrats as they gear up for the 2024 elections.
During a recent discussion with reporters and columnists about her new book, “The Art of Power: My Story as America’s First Woman Speaker of the House,” Pelosi highlighted the significance of concentrating on future objectives in elections rather than solely relying on past accomplishments. She advocates for an end to political violence and underscores her dedication to shaping a political landscape that aligns with her vision.
When asked if the title of her book was an intentional reference to Trump’s “The Art of the Deal,” Pelosi responded, “Nothing that I do has anything to do with him, except his downfall.”
