Murshidabad communal violence: NHRC takes cognisance of matter that killed 3, inquiry reported to be submitted in 3 weeks

NEW DELHI: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Tuesday took cognisance of the communal violence in Murshidabad triggered during anti-Waqf protests that killed three people. The rights body said that it would carry out on-spot inquiry into the matter and the report would be submitted in three weeks.
“The present complaint pertains to various Social Media News Articles highlighting the alleged murder of two named victims (father and son) due to the ongoing protest against the Waqf Amendment Bill, 2025. The complainant alleged that no proper action had been taken by the Police of Murshidabad District, West Bengal…,” NHRC law division said in a letter to director general of investigation.
“The complainant sought the intervention of the Commission in the matter. Given the seriousness of the matter, the Director General (Investigation), NHRC, is directed to assign a team of officers/officials from the Investigation Division of the Commission to conduct an on-spot inquiry at Murshidabad, West Bengal. The inquiry report should be submitted to the Commission within a period of three weeks,” it added.
Meanwhile, West Bengal Police arrested two brothers, Kalu Nadar and Dildar Nadar, for their alleged role in the killing of a father and son amid the communal violence. Both accused are residents of Jafrabad, the same locality as the victims.
With these latest arrests, the total number of people apprehended in connection with the unrest during the anti-Waqf (Amendment) Act protests in the district has risen to 221.
