
NEW DELHI: New Zealand’s 21-year-old right-hand batter Muhammad Abbas made history on Saturday, smashing the fastest-ever fifty on ODI debut during the first match of the three-match series against Pakistan at McLean Park in Napier.
The Lahore-born cricketer reached his half-century in just 24 balls, breaking the previous record held by India’s Krunal Pandya, who achieved the feat in 26 balls against England in 2021.

Abbas displayed remarkable intent, finishing his innings with 52 off 26 balls at an explosive strike rate of 200. His knock featured three fours and three sixes, providing New Zealand with the late fireworks in the match.

Following his record-breaking innings, Abbas described his debut as “special” and credited Mark Chapman — who played a match-winning 132 off 111 balls — for his support at the crease.
“This is special. Can’t describe the feeling now. Special to contribute, and Chappy was unbelievable. To get in there and show what I can do is special to me and my family. They’re sitting in the crowd, so it’s quite special for them as well,” Abbas said after the match.
He also revealed the backing he received from New Zealand coach Gary Stead, saying, “Gary told me to go out there and do what I do best. That was the license I needed.”
New Zealand take 1-0 lead in series
Mark Chapman’s century and right-arm seamer Nathan Smith’s four-wicket haul powered New Zealand to a convincing 73-run victory over Pakistan in the series opener.
With this win, the Blackcaps take a 1-0 lead, with the second match set to be played in Hamilton on Wednesday and the final match scheduled for Saturday at Mount Maunganui.
