NEW DELHI: Mahendra Singh Dhoni has often left fans amazed with his sharp on-field instincts — whether it’s using the Decision Review System (DRS), reshuffling the batting order, or setting the field under pressure. Another such moment unfolded during the IPL 2025 clash between Chennai Super Kings and Delhi Capitals at Chepauk, when Dhoni, sitting in the dressing room, appeared to give a verdict on a dismissal even before the umpire.

The incident occurred in the third over of CSK’s innings. Mitchell Starc made a strong LBW appeal against Vijay Shankar, but the umpire turned it down. DC wicketkeeper Abishek Porel told Starc that it had hit the bat first, prompting Axar Patel to skip the review based on his teammate’s call.
However, replays revealed that the ball had struck Shankar’s boot before the bat — a missed opportunity for Delhi. Starc, watching the replay on the big screen, smiled wryly, knowing they had let a big chance slip.

Stepping in as opener in the absence of the injured Faf du Plessis, KL Rahul led from the front with a classy 77, helping DC post a competitive 183/6.
In response, CSK once again faltered in the powerplay, struggling to break free against DC’s disciplined bowling attack. On a surface that didn’t allow easy stroke play, Chennai managed only 158/5 in their 20 overs, with Vijay Shankar holding fort with an unbeaten 69 off 54 balls.
For Delhi, Vipraj Nigam impressed with figures of 2/27, while every bowler apart from Mohit Sharma and Axar Patel chipped in with a wicket to seal a clinical all-round performance.
