Mohammed Shami faces death threat; FIR registered

Indian pacer Mohammed Shami received a death threat via email on Sunday, prompting an FIR registration at the Cyber Crime Police Station in Uttar Pradesh’s Amroha district. The complaint, filed by Shami’s brother Haseeb, identified Rajput Sindar as the sender who demanded a ransom of Rs one crore from the cricketer currently playing in IPL 2025 with Sunrisers Hyderabad.
The FIR was registered on Monday following the Superintendent of Police’s orders under sections 308(4) of Indian Penal Code (BNS) 2023, and sections 66d and 66e of Information Technology (Amendment) Act, 2008.
Shami’s performance in IPL 2025 has seen him take six wickets in nine matches for SRH at an average of 56.17. He recently showed impressive form in India’s Champions Trophy victory, claiming nine wickets in five matches, including a five-wicket haul against Bangladesh in Dubai.
Indian team head coach Gautam Gambhir also faced similar threats via email last month. The Delhi Police are investigating the case, with Gambhir already under police protection.

“We have been informed about an alleged threat mail received on an email ID associated with Gautam Gambhir. The matter is being investigated. Gautam Gambhir is already under Delhi Police protection, and we do not comment on specific security arrangements,” said DCP (Central) V. Harsha Vardhan.
Gambhir’s threat followed a terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam that resulted in 26 deaths and multiple injuries.

The authorities are actively investigating both threats against the prominent cricket figures.
