Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday flagged off the first ‘Make in India’ for export diesel locomotive from the Marhowrah Diesel Locomotive Factory in Bihar, marking a significant milestone in India’s rail manufacturing and export capabilities.Developed under the ‘Make in India’ initiative in partnership with Wabtec, the factory will export 150 Evolution Series ES43ACmi locomotives to Guinea, supporting the Simandou iron ore project in West Africa. The deal, worth over Rs 3,000 crore ($345.9 million), was won through global competitive bidding.

5 things to know about ‘Make in India’ Indian Railways locomotives for Guinea

  • The 4,500 HP locomotives feature AC propulsion, regenerative braking, and microprocessor-based controls, ensuring efficient long-haul freight operations. Their modular design simplifies maintenance and future upgrades.
  • Each engine includes a fire detection system, eco-friendly emission compliance, and ergonomically designed cabins equipped with a refrigerator, microwave, and waterless toilet. For synchronised operations, they are fitted with Distributed Power Wireless Control System (DPWCS).
  • The Marhowrah facility supports broad, standard, and Cape gauge tracks, making it compatible with various international rail systems. Its flexible infrastructure has played a critical role in enabling export readiness.
  • The locomotives will be delivered over three years—37 units in FY 2024–25, 82 in FY 2025–26, and 31 in FY 2026–27.
  • The factory currently provides 285 direct jobs, while 1,200+ individuals are employed indirectly. Across India, the joint venture has created employment for over 2,100 people.

This initiative boosts India’s presence in the global rail market and reinforces India-Africa cooperation, while also contributing to economic development and industrial advancement in both regions.
