Korean Air is set to enhance its sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) initiative for cargo with the collaboration of global logistics firm CEVA Logistics. Launched in September 2023, Korean Air’s SAF program encourages industry collaboration to promote sustainability.

The signing ceremony occurred during the Air Cargo China Conference 2024 in Shanghai. As per the agreement, CEVA Logistics will assist Korean Air in integrating SAF into its air cargo operations. In return, Korean Air will share carbon emission reductions achieved through SAF usage with CEVA Logistics. Both entities are dedicated to advancing SAF utilization and advocating for reduced carbon emissions within the logistics industry.

“We are pleased with the strong support from businesses and cargo customers for our SAF program,” said Jaedong Eum, Senior Vice President and Head of Cargo Business Division, Korean Air. “We will continue to build partnerships that enable our customers to actively and directly contribute to decarbonization efforts.”

“One of CEVA’s key short-term levers to promote decarbonization hinges on collaboration,” said Olivier Boccara, Air & Ocean Leader APAC, CEVA Logistics. “Through developing new solutions for our customers with airline partners like Korean Air, we are able to contribute to meaningful change in our industry. Extending our SAF offering into the Asian market is a tangible step we can take now as we look ahead to more advances in fuels and other technologies to decarbonize air freight and the global supply chain.”

In February 2022, Korean Air achieved a significant milestone as the first Korean flag carrier to deploy Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) on its scheduled Paris – Seoul Incheon route. Building on this initiative, the airline further solidified its commitment to sustainability by signing a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Shell in September 2022. This agreement outlines Korean Air’s plans to procure SAF at major airports across Asia Pacific and the Middle East from 2026 to 2031.

Moving forward, Korean Air remains dedicated to advancing sustainable aviation practices. The airline will continue to collaborate closely with its customers, energy companies, and stakeholders to promote the widespread adoption of SAF within the global aviation industry.
