The two doctors are believed to be a part of the syndicate of RG Kar MCH’s former principal Sandip Ghosh, who is currently in CBI custody in connection with the case

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Saturday summoned Dr Avik Dey and Dr Birupak Biswas for questioning in the RG Kar rape and murder case. The two doctors are believed to be a part of the syndicate of RG Kar MCH’s former principal Sandip Ghosh, who is currently in CBI custody in connection with the case. The questioning of both doctors is underway.

Dr Dey and Dr Birupak came under the probe agency’s scanner after their names came up in various audio clips. In one audio clip, Dr Dey is heard threatening other students and junior doctors. Dr Biswas, on the other hand, was present in RG Kar MCH on the day of the incident on August 9 whereas he had no locus standi to be present, junior doctors have alleged.

Notably, both doctors have been suspended by the West Bengal health department.

The central probe agency had, on Friday, told a Kolkata Court that more suspects have emerged during the investigation of the rape and murder case and their roles are being investigated.

While Dr Dey used to work as an RMO in Burdwan Medical College and is now a first-year surgery PGT at IPGMER; DR Biswas, senior resident doctor of pathology, was transferred to Kakdwip Sub-Divisional Hospital last August from Burdwan Medical College.

The central probe agency is seeking answers to questions like –

  • Why was Sandip Ghosh in touch with Dr Dey and Dr Biswas after the incident?
  • Why did Kolkata police identify Dr Dey as a forensic expert?
  • Both these doctors are from Burdhwan Medical College, so what were they doing at RG Kar MCH on the day of the incident?
