Kamala Harris endorses tax cut for tips, Donald Trump accuses her of ‘copying his policy’ – Times of India

TOI World Desk

US Vice President Kamala Harris, probably for the first time, agreed with her rival Donald Trump and showed her support for removing the tax on tips.
“It is my promise to everyone here that when I am president, we will continue to fight for working families, including raising the minimum wage and eliminating taxes on tips for service and hospitality workers,” Harris said while stopping in Nevada for the upcoming presidential elections campaign.

Harris and her Democratic running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, wrapped up a multi-day tour of battleground states on Saturday with their stop in Nevada, a western state that could play a pivotal role in the November 5 presidential election.
Following Harris’s statement, former President Donald Trump wrote on Truth Social, “Kamala Harris, whose ‘honeymoon’ period is ending and who is starting to get hammered in the polls, just copied my ‘no taxes on tips’ policy. The difference is, she won’t do it; she just wants it for political purposes! This was a TRUMP idea.”

“She has no ideas; she can only steal from me. Remember, Kamala has proposed the LARGEST TAX INCREASE IN HISTORY – it won’t happen. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!!!” he added.
Harris, now the official Democratic presidential nominee, has been on the campaign trail alongside Governor Tim Walz. The pair have visited key swing states such as Wisconsin, Michigan, and Arizona, where voters have a history of alternating their support between the Republican and Democratic parties in presidential races.
The path to the White House is not determined by the national popular vote but rather by securing a minimum of 270 electoral votes. Each state is allocated a specific number of electoral votes proportional to its population, which elevates the significance of swing states in the election.
Following her visit to Nevada, Harris returned to her home state of California, heading to San Francisco for a Sunday fundraiser co-hosted by Nancy Pelosi, the former Speaker of the House of Representatives. The event is anticipated to draw a crowd of nearly 700 attendees and is projected to amass over $12 million in contributions, according to a campaign official.
Kamala ahead of Trump, poll says
According to a recent New York Times/Siena College poll released on Saturday, conducted from August 5th to 9th, Harris holds a four-point lead over Donald Trump in Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. The polls show Harris with 50% support among likely voters, while Trump garners 46% in each of the three states.
The surveys, which interviewed a total of 1,973 likely voters across the three states, have a margin of sampling error ranging from plus or minus 4.2 to 4.8 percentage points. Specifically, “The margin of sampling error among likely voters was plus or minus 4.8 percentage points in Michigan, plus or minus 4.2 points in Pennsylvania, and plus or minus 4.3 points in Wisconsin,” the report added.
These findings suggest that Harris currently has an advantage over Trump in these crucial swing states, which could play a significant role in determining the outcome of the upcoming presidential election.
As the 2024 election approaches, the dynamics in these key battleground states will likely play a crucial role in shaping the outcome.
