India-Asean trade talks: Jakarta to host next AITIGA review in October, $123 bn bilateral trade in focus

The next round of negotiations to review the ASEAN-India Trade in Goods Agreement (AITIGA) will be held on October 6-7, 2025, at the ASEAN Secretariat in Jakarta, Indonesia, hosted by Malaysia, the Commerce Ministry said.The tenth round of talks concluded in New Delhi between August 10 and 14, with the Joint Committee focusing on advancing the AITIGA review to enhance its effectiveness, improve market access, and strengthen trade facilitation, PTI reported. ASEAN accounts for about 11 per cent of India’s global trade, with bilateral trade touching $123 billion in 2024-25.“The next AITIGA Joint Committee meeting is scheduled for 6-7 October 2025 at the ASEAN Secretariat in Jakarta, Indonesia, and will be hosted by Malaysia,” the ministry said.In a separate statement, the ministry said the fourth meeting of the India-Singapore Joint Working Group on Trade and Investment (JWGTI) took place in New Delhi on August 14. Discussions centred on identifying priority sectors for alignment, improving logistics and supply chains, streamlining regulatory frameworks, and facilitating cross-border trade.The meeting also reviewed collaboration in semiconductors and trade digitalisation, and explored new partnerships in skills development and capacity building. Singapore remains India’s largest ASEAN trading partner, with bilateral trade of $34.26 billion in 2024-25. It is also the second-largest source of foreign direct investment into India, with equity inflows of $163.85 billion (Rs 11,24,509.65 crore) from April 2000 to July 2024, accounting for about 24 per cent of total inflows.
