A civic police volunteer has been arrested for the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College
Thanks to a torn Bluetooth earphone set, Kolkata police have identified and arrested a suspect in the sexual assault and murder of a woman postgraduate trainee doctor at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
The accused, identified as Sanjay Roy, is an outsider who had easy access to different departments of the hospital due to his role as a civic volunteer. “We have arrested one person, who is an outsider. His activities are quite suspicious and he seems to be directly involved in the crime,” the police officer told PTI.
Bluetooth Caught On CCTV
Sources told News18 that the accused’s earphones was a crucial clue that led to his arrest. According to sources, CCTV footage showed Roy wearing the Bluetooth earphones while entering the hospital, but it was missing when he left. Police recovered the torn part of the earphone and were able to connect it to the suspect, helping them crack the case.
Speaking about the arrested accused, police said that they recovered a torn part of a Bluetooth earphone which led to the culprit. Other PGTs and female doctors also identified the culprit from CCTV footage grabbed from other parts of the hospital premises, a source in the police department said.
The semi-nude body of the woman PGT doctor, a second-year student in the chest medicine department, was found inside the seminar hall of the hospital on Friday. She was on duty on Thursday night, and her body bore injury marks.
The preliminary autopsy report has indicated sexual abuse before the woman doctor’s murder. Her father had alleged that she was raped and murdered inside the hospital, and efforts were being made to hide the truth. Police have also questioned two intern doctors in connection with the ongoing investigation. They are trying to determine if Roy had any accomplices or if he acted alone.
The arrest of Roy, a civic volunteer with alleged access to the powerful police welfare board, has raised questions about the security measures and oversight within the hospital. “Now, we are trying to find out who else was with him or he had someone else with him,” a police officer said, adding that police might conduct necessary medical examinations on him.
