Honeymoon horror: Meghalaya Police arrives in UP; takes custody of Sonam Raghuvanshi

NEW DELHI: Meghalaya police on Monday took custody of Sonam Raghuvanshi — accused of conspiring to murder her husband during their honeymoon — from Uttar Pradesh Police after she was found near a dhaba on the Varanasi-Ghazipur main road.A team of Meghalaya police arrived at the Sakhi One-Stop Centre in Ghazipur, where Sonam had been kept.Earlier, three other accused were arrested after confessing to being hired by Sonam to kill her husband Raja.Meanwhile, the autopsy report of Raja Raghuvanshi revealed that he sustained injuries from a sharp cutting weapon.“Post mortem indicates two head injuries caused by a sharp cutting weapon,” said Meghalaya Special Investigation Team chief Herbert Pyniaid Kharkongor.A machete, suspected to be the murder weapon, was also recovered nearby. Sonam had remained untraceable until Monday. Adding to the intrigue, a local tourist guide claimed to have seen the couple with three men on May 23 while they were trekking from Nongriat. The crime came to light after the couple — who had recently married — went missing on May 23 during their honeymoon in Cherrapunjee, Meghalaya. They were last seen checking out of a homestay in Nongriat. Their rented scooter was later found abandoned near Sohrarim. Ten days later, Raja’s body was discovered in a deep gorge near the Weisawdong Falls in East Khasi Hills. The guide said he had earlier offered his services to the couple, but they had hired another guide. Police say the investigation is still underway, and further arrests are likely.
