Hancock County Schools, historically ranked among the lowest in state performance, is embarking on an ambitious journey to reshape its future. Spearheading this transformation is Dr. Anton Anthony, whose dynamic leadership and rich background as a former principal in the district equip him with the insight and vision needed to drive substantial improvements. Under Dr. Anthony’s guidance, the district is set for a remarkable turnaround.
“Having been a principal here before, I know exactly what our students and community need to succeed,” said Dr. Anthony. “Now, as the superintendent, I am committed to aggressively pursuing our goals and communicating our vision to the community and the world.”
“With clear goals, a data-driven approach, and a commitment to community engagement, Dr. Anthony is dedicated to leading the district to new heights of academic achievement and success.”
Innovative Community Engagement
Dr. Anthony is rolling out several creative initiatives to involve the community and build a nurturing educational atmosphere. These efforts include:
Leadership Roundtable: Forming a collaborative leadership team to secure support and input from local leaders and stakeholders.
School Progress Game Nights: Hosting interactive events where families can engage with school staff and stay informed about the school’s achievements and future plans.
Karaoke Math Sessions:Merging fun with learning to boost parental participation in their children’s math education.
Family Movie Nights:Offering engaging events that provide parents with strategies to enhance their children’s educational experiences.
Data-Driven Approach
“We begin with a clear vision and a firm commitment to our data-driven goals,” Dr. Anthony stated. “By focusing on specific, measurable outcomes like the 10% and 6% increases, we are dedicated to individual student growth and academic excellence. Together, we will cultivate a culture of continuous improvement and high expectations.”
Emphasis on Literacy and Numeracy
At Hancock County Schools, prioritizing literacy and numeracy is essential, especially for K-8 students. Utilizing the iReady curriculum consistently, the district ensures personalized learning and accurate progress assessment. By integrating ELA and Math with Science and Social Studies and providing targeted interventions, the district aims to establish a solid foundation for academic success and lifelong learning.
Implementing Standards-Based Grading
This academic year, Hancock County Schools is adopting standards-based grading, which prioritizes skill mastery over traditional grades. This method ensures students grasp and excel in key competencies, offering a more accurate representation of their learning and progress. By pinpointing specific areas for improvement, the district supports personalized student development and academic excellence.
