NEW DELHI: Assam’s largest city Guwahati is set to make history in the world of cricket. According to the announcement made by BCCI general secretary Devajit Saikia, the city will host its first-ever Test match and World Cup matches in the upcoming months.
The ACA Stadium in Guwahati will be the first venue in the northeastern region of India to host a Test match.
“No Test and World Cup matches have been played in Guwahati so far. But, as per the decision taken at the BCCI apex council meeting on Saturday, Guwahati will host both those matches this year,” Saikia said.
The second Test of the two-match series between India and South Africa is scheduled to take place from November 22, marking a significant milestone for the city’scricketing infrastructure.
Additionally, Guwahati has been selected as one of the venues for the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup, which will be held from September 24 to November 2. The city is expected to host five to six matches during the prestigious tournament, further solidifying its position as an emerging cricket hub in the region.
“The Women’s World Cup will be held from September 24 to November 2. The schedule is still being finalised. Guwahati has been selected as one of the venues for it,” Saikia said.
This development is a testament to the efforts of the Assam Cricket Association (ACA) and the support received from the ICC Chairman Jay Shah and the Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma. Their contributions have played a crucial role in Guwahati’s emergence as a preferred cricket venue.
The hosting of these high-profile matches is not only a significant achievement for the city but also a milestone for the northeastern region of India. It will provide an opportunity for cricket enthusiasts in the region to witness top-level international matches and potentially inspire a new generation of cricketers.
With the necessary infrastructure in place and the backing of cricketing authorities, Guwahati is poised to showcase its capabilities as a world-class cricket venue, further enhancing the sport’s popularity and reach across the country.
