Govinda recalls being thrown out of BR Chopra’s office for rejecting Abhimanyu's role in Mahabharat: 'Ye kya pagal hai, bahar nikalo isko'

Veteran Bollywood actor Govinda recently shared an intriguing anecdote about his early days in the industry, revealing how he was once thrown out of filmmaker BR Chopra’s office after rejecting a role in Mahabharat. In a conversation with Mukesh Khanna on Bheeshm International, Govinda recounted the incident that stemmed from his mother’s disapproval of the role offered to him.
The actor recalled that he had a close relationship with Renu Chopra and was often at their home, even assisting with household chores. One day, he was called to BR Chopra’s office, where the filmmaker informed him that he had been selected to play Abhimanyu in Mahabharat. However, Govinda turned down the offer, citing his mother’s wishes. Chopra asked him, ‘What is your mom?’ He explained that his mother, who was a Sadhvi, had advised against taking up the role.
Govinda admitted that, at the time, he did not view Chopra as an influential figure in the industry. His response did not sit well with the filmmaker, who had a reputation for being short-tempered. So he blurted out, ‘Woh thodi pagal hai (She is mad). The situation escalated when Govinda defended his mother’s stance, reminding Chopra that she had acted in several films, including Sharda, and was senior to him in the industry.
However, what ultimately led to his removal from the office was an unusual piece of advice from his mother. She had instructed him to deliver a specific line to Chopra while performing in front of him. When Govinda did so, the filmmaker was taken aback and immediately ordered his removal from the office. The actor recalled Chopra exclaiming in frustration, “Ye kya pagal hai, bahar nikalo isko (Who is this mad person? Throw him out).”
Despite the fallout, Govinda’s career soared in the years that followed, making him one of Bollywood’s most beloved actors. His ability to balance humor, drama, and action cemented his place in the industry.
Recently, Govinda has been in the news due to his personal life, as reports of a divorce from his wife, Sunita Ahuja, have been making headlines. The actor has not confirmed the rumors.
