Gatwick Airport, the UK’s second busiest, reported disruptions believed to be caused by a Microsoft Windows security update. Across the UK, the computer glitch led to malfunctions in departure screens, displaying outdated information regarding gate numbers and departure times. This resulted in some passengers missing their flights. Additionally, a fire alarm at Edinburgh Airport was set off, presumably due to the same computer issue, and efforts are underway to address this problem. Meanwhile, Ryanair has warned of “potential disruptions across the network” and recommends passengers check the Ryanair app today for the latest updates on their flights. Similarly, US-based airlines including United, Delta, and American Airlines have faced disruptions, implementing a “global ground stop” for all flights. Microsoft acknowledged the issue, stating it was affecting users’ access to various Microsoft 365 apps and services and confirmed that mitigation actions were being taken.
ABTA, the Travel Advice & Holiday Information belonging to the UK Travel Industry, states, “A global IT outage has impacted various businesses around the world, including some in the transportation sector. Not all companies have been affected, but for those that are, the extent of the impact varies significantly from one to another. If you’re traveling today, we strongly advise that you check with your transport providers to determine if they are affected. For instance, if you’re planning to fly, it’s crucial to verify information from both your airline and airport, as well as your transportation to the airport. Remember, the outage is impacting businesses differently, making it essential to confirm whether your travel arrangements have been disrupted. Additionally, due to potential delays, travelers should ensure they have essential items such as snacks, medication, baby formula, and nappies in their hand luggage.”
