'Felt like quitting many times': Mary Kom, Avani Lekhara narrate how sports helped them deal with pressure on 'Pariksha Pe Charcha'

Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to social media on Monday to share the latest Pariksha Pe Charcha 2025 episode, featuring a discussion on overcoming exam stress with sportspersons.
It included boxer MC Mary Kom, para-badminton player Suhas L Yathiraj, and paralympic rifle shooter Avani Lekhara. PM Modi praised the athletes and tagged them in his post, saying:
“Our sportspersons inspire us with their resilience, focus, and winning mindset. Watch @MangteC, @suhas_ly, and @AvaniLekhara share tips on handling exam pressure during Pariksha Pe Charcha. #PPC2025”
The episode featured a panel discussion where the athletes discussed their personal experiences with pressure and setbacks.
Mary Kom recalled fighting against stereotypes to prove that women could succeed in boxing. “In the beginning it was very difficult because boxing is not considered a women’s sport. It was challenging for me. I just wanted to prove myself in front of all the girls and women of the country, and in this way, I have brought glory to the country by becoming World Champion multiple times,” she said.
Suhas Yathiraj shared his experience from the 2001 Asian Championship, where nervousness led him to lose the first set. When we sit for an exam, we all feel nervous. I was extremely nervous during my first match and lost the first set. During the break, I told myself to let go of the fear of failure. I played with confidence and ended up winning the match—and the gold medal.”
Avani Lekhara talked about her struggles with self-doubt in shooting. “There were many times I felt like quitting. But I realised that fear comes from a lack of knowledge. As I learned more about my sport, my fear faded.”
The video also included highlights from past episodes of Pariksha Pe Charcha 2025, featuring guests like Deepika Padukone and Sadhguru.
PM Modi kicked off the 2025 season of Pariksha Pe Characha a few days ago where he reinforced the importance of skill development, smart use of technology, and maintaining a balance between academics and hobbies.
