Ethiopian Airlines Group, Africa’s largest and one of the fastest-growing airline brands globally, has launched thrice-weekly flights to Nekemte’s Gudina Tumsa Airport. This coincides with the inauguration of newly completed airfield and passenger access projects at the airport.

The new flights to Gudina Tumsa Airport will operate on the following schedule:

  • Addis Ababa (ADD) to Nekemte (NEK): Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays
  • Nekemte (NEK) to Addis Ababa (ADD): Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays

Regarding the inaugural, Ethiopian Airlines Group Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Mesfin Tasew said, “Our joy is doubled as we celebrate the completion of the new Gudina Tumsa Airport project and the commencement of a new service. This project is part of our vision to expand our domestic destinations nationwide with a firm determination to strengthen regional connectivity. And we are truly pleased to witness the completion of yet another aviation facility project and service commencement.”

The Gudina Tumsa Airport project, costing 1.1 billion ETB, features a new airfield, access road, watch towers, temporary terminal, and other facilities. The construction of the permanent terminal is set to begin in the upcoming budget year. The runway is designed to accommodate Boeing 737-800 Max aircraft, while the apron can park either two B737-800 Max or four Q-400 aircraft simultaneously.

Ethiopian Airlines, aiming to expand its domestic network to 31 destinations from the current 23 by 2035, has already started constructing and upgrading domestic airports and aviation facilities to provide more extensive and advanced flight services across the country.

The newly completed airport facility is part of Ethiopian Airlines’ efforts to enhance the socio-economic and cultural connections between Ethiopian cities and beyond.

Recently inaugurated projects include Addis Ababa Bole International Airport Terminal I, Axum Yohannes IV Airport, Jinka Airport Terminal, and Gode Ugaas Miraad Airport, with more projects set for completion soon.
