Emraan Hashmi begins filming for Suparn Varma's Shah Bano Case drama in Lucknow - Exclusive

Emraan Hashmi has started filming for Suparn Varma‘s highly anticipated courtroom drama based on the Shah Bano case. The actor will be seen playing the role of Bano’s husband, an influential advocate whose stance on the case sparked intense political and legal debates.
An industry source revealed ETimes exclusively, “Emran and other unit members are shooting in Lucknow for the project.’’
The film also stars Yami Gautam and is being produced by Suparn Varma, a filmmaker known for his work on courtroom dramas. Varma had previously shared his reasons for wanting to bring this significant story to life.
The source further said, “It is a historical case about Shah Bano who fought for her alimony and won in the Supreme Court. It is a very landmark ruling and its after-effects are still felt to date. It is an important story that needs to be told today. Human Rights are the most important we as people have our fundamental rights and they need to be fought for and they need to be kind of talked about.’’
For those unfamiliar, the Shah Bano case was a significant legal dispute in India about Muslim women’s rights to receive maintenance after divorce. In 1978, Shah Bano was divorced by her husband under Islamic law and sought financial support under Indian law. The Supreme Court ruled in her favor in 1985, but this decision was met with opposition from some Muslim groups. The government later passed a law that overturned this ruling. The case remains important in Indian history, highlighting the challenges between personal laws and women’s rights.
