President Donald Trump will deliver his first address to Congress since returning to office on Tuesday, vowing a “renewal of the American dream” while outlining his administration’s agenda of expanded presidential authority and a reshaped global order.
The speech, scheduled for 9:00 pm (0200 GMT Wednesday), follows six turbulent weeks in which Trump has implemented sweeping changes, including a radical restructuring of the federal government led by billionaire advisor Elon Musk. The administration’s moves have included shutting down agencies and dismissing numerous government employees.
Trump’s global policy shifts have also sparked controversy, with the president pausing military aid to Ukraine while engaging Russia, declaring his intent to “own” Gaza, and imposing tariffs on US allies.
The White House confirmed the address would center on “the renewal of the American dream,” sharing links to Fox News, which reported that Trump would discuss domestic and foreign policy achievements, economic plans, border security funding, and his vision for global peace.
“President Trump is the greatest orator we’ve ever had in the Oval Office. Every time he’s done one of these addresses, Americans have been overwhelmingly blown away,” Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller stated.
Trump himself took to Truth Social, promising that the speech “WILL BE BIG” and pledging that “I WILL TELL IT LIKE IT IS!”
Push for Executive Power and Economic Policies
Trump’s return to the Capitol comes four years after the January 6 attack, with the president now addressing a Republican-controlled Congress determined to expand executive authority. He is expected to highlight his record number of executive orders, which have included dismantling federal agencies, ending diversity programs, and detaining undocumented migrants at Guantanamo Bay.
Alongside Musk, Trump has demonstrated his commitment to advancing his “Make America Great Again” agenda, even if it means testing constitutional limits or straining relations with US allies.
Foreign policy is expected to be a major theme, particularly regarding Ukraine. Trump hinted that he would provide updates on the situation after freezing military aid to Kyiv and initiating talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin. His stance on Ukraine has raised concerns, especially following a tense Oval Office meeting with President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Trump is also under pressure to address economic concerns, especially inflation. His recent tariffs have unsettled markets, with US stocks closing sharply lower on Monday after confirming new levies against Mexico and Canada would take effect at midnight.
