Deepika Padukone reveals she was hiding her visits to the therapist from the paparazzi: 'There was so much stigma...'

Deepika Padukone has opened up on the importance of mental health awareness as she has spoken about undergoing depression. The actress has often broken down as she recalled her time when she was undergoing depression. However, earlier, she kept it private. She recently revealed that she kept it as a secret and did not tell the world about it due to the whole stigma around mental health.
The actress spoke about what made her finally come out and openly talk about mental health. She told The CEO Magazine, “I was at the top of my career, doing everything I loved,” Deepika Padukone told The CEO Magazine. While she would feel the exhaustion and fatique constantly, she realised something was wrong with her when she just collapsed one morning. She then went through some tests.
DP said, “I went for a whole bunch of scans, but over the next couple of weeks, I realized I wasn’t feeling any better. There was this weird feeling in my stomach. I would just keep crying and breaking down at the drop of a hat. I just didn’t feel like myself.”
She further added that she kept her therapy visits a big secret. “We didn’t want it to be seen that I was going to the therapist… We were so covert and didn’t tell anyone about how I was feeling,” she revealed.
However, later she wondered that why is there so much stigma around it. Once she decided to recover, she realised, “I wondered why we had hushed everything up and why there was so much stigma around mental health. I decided that I wanted to go public and share my journey and my experience with the world.”
Deepika then started her foundation to help people dealing with depression and other mental health issues. “Even today, people refer to it when they want to communicate to their peers or to their parents about what they are experiencing. I realized that the floodgates had opened and there was just so much more to be done,” she said.
