High-value Rs 2000 banknotes worth Rs 5,956 crore are still in circulation more than two years after the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) announced their withdrawal, official data showed on Monday.The RBI had notified the withdrawal of the denomination on May 19, 2023, while clarifying that the notes would continue to be legal tender. At that time, the total value of Rs 2000 notes in circulation stood at Rs 3.56 lakh crore, PTI reported.According to the central bank, the figure has now shrunk to Rs 5,956 crore as of August 31, 2025. “Thus, 98.33 per cent of the Rs 2000 banknotes in circulation as on May 19, 2023, has since been returned,” the RBI said in a statement.The facility to exchange Rs 2000 notes has been available at 19 designated RBI issue offices since May 19, 2023. From October 9, 2023, these offices also started accepting deposits of the notes into bank accounts.In addition, individuals can send Rs 2000 notes via India Post from any post office in the country to RBI issue offices for credit to their accounts. The designated issue offices are located in Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Belapur, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Jammu, Kanpur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, New Delhi, Patna and Thiruvananthapuram.
