Covid-19 in India: Active coronavirus cases cross 6,000; six deaths in last 24 hours

NEW DELHI: Active Covid-19 cases in India crossed 6,000-mark with six deaths reported in the last 24 hours, according to the Union health ministry data released on Sunday. 769 new infections have been reported in the last 48 and Kerala remains the most affected state. This is followed by Gujarat, West Bengal and Delhi. The country has 6,133 active cases.Officials noted that majority of the cases were mild and are being treated at home.Since January, the country has recorded 65 Covid-related deaths. As of May 22, there were 257 active cases nationwide.Official sources said that state and district surveillance teams under the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme are actively tracking cases of Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) and Severe Acute Respiratory Illness (SARI).“Testing is recommended for all admitted SARI cases and 5 per cent of ILI cases as per guidelines, and positive SARI samples are sent for Whole Genome Sequencing through the ICMR VRDL network, ” PTI reported quoting official source said. Technical review meetings were conducted on June 2 and 3, led by Sunita Sharma, director general of health services, to assess the situation and readiness efforts.
