
NEW DELHI: Union minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Wednesday hailed the successful speed trial of the Bairabi-Sairang railway line in Mizoram, calling it a major step in connecting the state to “every heart of India!”Sharing the update on X, the minister for railways and information & broadcasting said, “Connecting Mizoram capital (Aizawl) to every heart of India! CRS speed trial of Bairabi-Sairang new BG line project of Lumding Division – N F Railway.“The Bairabi-Sairang railway line in Mizoram was officially commissioned on Tuesday, marking the full integration of the state into India’s national railway network, an official said.The 51.38-km broad gauge line received final approval after inspection by the Commission of Railway Safety (CRS), he added.“The railway line is technically safe now. Once the Centre gives its nod, trains will start operating. The formal inauguration is to take place soon,” Northeast Frontier Railway Chief Public Relations Officer, Kapinjal Kishore Sharma told PTI.He further said that the final 33.86-km stretch from Hortoki to Sairang was inspected by Commissioner of Railway Safety (Northeast Frontier Circle), Sumeet Singhal, between June 6 and 10. This section, which passes through hilly terrain, includes 32 tunnels and 35 major bridges.“This milestone completes the entire 51.38-km stretch, bringing direct rail connectivity to Aizawl for the first time,” Sharma noted.“With the completion of the final leg, Mizoram is now fully integrated into the national railway network. This transformative achievement is expected to significantly enhance passenger and freight movement, stimulate socio-economic growth, and fulfill a long-standing aspiration of people,” he added.Bairabi in Kolasib district, near the Assam border, has been Mizoram’s only rail link until now. Sairang, a satellite town about 20 km from Aizawl, is set to change that.
