According to sources, Rajnath Singh, BJP’s winning candidate from Lucknow, is likely to continue as the Union Defence Minister.

With just a few hours left for Narendra Modi’s third consecutive oath-taking ceremony at the Rashtrapati Bhavan on Sunday at 7.15 pm, all eyes are on the berth allocation in Modi’s Cabinet. As the Bharatiya Janata Party failed to secure an absolute majority of 272 seats in the Lok Sabha polls, it will be forming the government with the support of its NDA allies, JD(U) and TDP.

Given the situation, major allies are eyeing major shares in the cabinet, and the allocations would be tricky. According to sources, Rajnath Singh, BJP’s winning candidate from Lucknow, is likely to continue as the Union Defence Minister.

Earlier, JD(S) leader and former Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy had hinted that his party was interested in the agriculture portfolio in government.

Sources said several leaders from the NDA allies are being considered for important portfolios.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday met with President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan and staked claim to form the government. Earlier in the day, PM Modi was elected the leader of the alliance in the NDA Parliamentary meeting.

With 12 MPs, the JD(U) is the second biggest BJP ally after the Telugu Desam Party’s 16 in the NDA. While JD(U)is likely to demand three cabinet berths, TDP will probably demand four.

The BJP bagged 240 seats in the 543-member Lok Sabha, 32 short of an absolute majority, while the NDA secured 293 seats.
