Rajnath Singh has said a lot is to be done for the safety of women in the country, and said the government has amended the laws for capital punishment to rapists.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Friday said there is still a lot to be done for the safety of women in the country, adding that the government looks at things strictly.

On social media platform X, Singh also said the government has amended the law for capital punishment to rapists.

“We have amended the law to provide for the capital punishment for heinous crimes like rape. This law should be implemented with strictness,” Rajnath Singh tweeted.

“Considering the atrocities and crimes against women in the country, despite all the changes, it seems that a lot remains to be done. Our government has adopted a strict attitude towards crimes against women, but many states are not making sincere efforts in this direction,” Singh’s another post on X read.

“The recent heart-wrenching incident in Kolkata is very tragic and disgraceful,” he added.

The Defence Minister’s statement comes against the backdrop of the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar College and Hospital on August 9, and the massive protests which followed.

On August 28, President Droupadi Murmu spoke on the Kolkata rape and murder case and expressed anguish at continuing crimes against women.

“I was dismayed and horrified when I came to hear of it. What is more depressing is the fact that it was not the only incident of its kind; it is part of a series of crimes against women,” the President had said.
