“The recent heart-wrenching incident in Kolkata is very tragic and disgraceful,” he added.
The Defence Minister’s statement comes against the backdrop of the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar College and Hospital on August 9, and the massive protests which followed.
On August 28, President Droupadi Murmu spoke on the Kolkata rape and murder case and expressed anguish at continuing crimes against women.
“I was dismayed and horrified when I came to hear of it. What is more depressing is the fact that it was not the only incident of its kind; it is part of a series of crimes against women,” the President had said.
