The Bombay High Court on Wednesday granted bail to Gangster Chhota Rajan who was convicted in the Jaya Shetty murder case in 2001.
The Gangster was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment in the case earlier this year. While granting him bail, a Divisional bench of Justice Revati Mohite Dere and Justice Prithviraj Chavan ordered him to submit a bond for Rs 1 lakh. However, Chhota Rajan will continue to be behind bars due to his involvement in other criminal cases.
The Gangster was convicted in the murder case by a special court in May this year and sent to life imprisonment. He later appealed to the Bombay High Court for the suspension of the sentence and grant of bail.
Chhota Rajan is currently lodged in Delhi’s Tihar Jail in another murder case.
CHHOTA RAJAN ACQUITTED OF MURDER OF TRADE UNION LEADER
Last year, a special CBI court had acquitted the Gangster from the murder case of renowned Mumbai trade union leader Dr Datta Samant, who was shot dead in 1997.
The court acquitted him on the grounds of lack of cogent evidence.
“In this case, no incriminating evidence has come on record against the accused in respect of conspiracy to commit the murder of Dr Datta Samant,” the court said.
Samant was shot dead on Padmavati Road by four people on January 16, 1997, while travelling from Powai to Ghatkopar in his vehicle.
Three people were convicted in the murder case in 2000 and Rajan was named among the wanted accused in the case. He was arrested in Indonesia in 2015 and brought to Mumbai. All pending cases against Chhota Rajan were transferred to the CBI.
