United States’ Congresswomen Pramila Jayapal and Sylvia Garcia, along with several co-sponsors, have reintroduced the American Dream and Promise Act of 2025.
A press release from Rep. Jayapal’s office says that the bill has gained support from 201 co-sponsors in Congress and nearly 120 organizations.
The American Dream and Promise Act of 2025 is a bipartisan bill designed to create a pathway to citizenship for Dreamers, undocumented immigrants who were brought to the United States as children.
The bill also provides protections for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) holders and Deferred Enforced Departure (DED) beneficiaries, offering stability to those who have lived and contributed to American society for decades.
Lawmakers estimate that DACA recipients pay around $6.2 billion in federal taxes and $3.3 billion in state and local taxes each year. The Center for American Progress also projects that granting Dreamers a pathway to citizenship could boost the national GDP by $799 billion over the next decade.
Rep. Jayapal criticised the “cruel” immigration policies of former President Donald Trump, saying they created fear among Dreamers and left them uncertain about their legal future.
“Dreamers are Americans and Dreamers are home. It’s past time that we give them citizenship and pass legislation to protect them from cruel mass deportation campaigns and anti-immigrant stunts,” she said.
Before taking office, former President Donald Trump signaled a willingness to work with Democrats on protecting Dreamers, suggesting that Republicans were open to a bipartisan solution, according to the press release.
