Auto sales steady in May: Two-wheelers, passenger cars lead growth; three-wheeler demand softens

Vehicle segments demonstrated steady performance in May 2025, as indicated in a recent analysis from the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers, quoted by ANI.The combined domestic sales figures for passenger vehicles, three-Wheelers, two-wheelers, and quadricycles reached 20,12,969 units in May 2025.The strongest performance was observed in two-wheeler and passenger vehicle categories. However, three-wheelers and quadricycles experienced a downturn in their numbers. The report highlighted that two-wheeler category, including scooters, motorcycles, and mopeds, showed an increase of 2.2 per cent in May 2025 when compared to the previous year’s figures.Within two-wheelers, scooter sales grew by 7.1 per cent domestically, whilst motorcycle sales remained unchanged, and moped sales decreased by approximately 8 per cent. Meanwhile, three-wheelers showed a reduction of 3.3 per cent when assessed month-on-month.The three-wheeler sector’s production increased by 10.6 per cent to 164,158 units during the cumulative period, with exports rising by 29.6 per cent to 58,608 units, despite domestic sales falling by 2.0 per cent. The sector outlook remains optimistic, influenced by recent RBI repo rate reductions and predictions of abundant monsoons, which should enhance affordability and buyer confidence in subsequent months.“Going forward, the RBI’s three repo rate cuts totaling 100 basis points in less than six months, along with a forecast of above-normal monsoons are some of the indicators which should positively impact the Auto sector by improving affordability and boosting consumer sentiment in the coming months,” said Rajesh Menon, Director General, SIAM, commenting on May-2025 performance. The passenger vehicle category saw significant contributions from Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. and Hyundai Motor India Ltd.In the Utility Vehicles category, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. achieved sales of 84,226 units, while Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. recorded 110,757 units for April-May 2025-26.
