Vidaamuyarchi box office verdict: Ajith Kumar’s Vidaamuyarchi hit the screens on February 6 and opened to a good response at the box office. It then witnessed a drop. The film eventually stayed stable at a somewhat lower level. The action thriller has now ended its run and the verdict is out.

Vidaamuyarchi underperforms at the box office

Vidaamuyarchi, one of the biggest films of the year, has failed to live up to expectations at the box office despite Ajth Kumar’s popularity. According to Manobala Vijayabalan, a trade analyst, the film earned Rs 150 crore globally during its full run.

“Vidaamuyarchi grossed around ₹150 cr globally. The film didn’t perform as expected with the audience because it was a remake of a three-decade-old film. This made it difficult for it to recover the budget at the box office,” he told Indiatimes.

Vidaamuyarchi, a remake of the Hollywood thriller Breakdown (1997), failed to meet the standards set by the Pongal releases Viswasam (2019) and Thunivu (2023). Siva’s action drama earned Rs 205 crore in its full run despite releasing with Rajinikanth’s Petta. Similarly, the H Vinoth-directed heist thriller raked in Rs 200 crore in its lifetime despite clashing with Varisu. Ideally, being a solo release, Vidaamuyarchi should have beaten them with ease but that did not happen. Vidaamuyarchi, in fact, could not even outperform Valimai. The action thriller, which was released in 2022, made Rs 166 crore from its run in theatres.

Vidaamuyarchi received mixed reviews, with critics lauding Ajith’s performance but panning the execution. Thus worked against the film. It also failed to woo the audience because of its lack of mass appeal.
