EXCLUSIVE: Hoof Dreams, a documentary that delves into the world of equestrian Eventing and the quest for gender equality in Olympic sports, is getting a theatrical release.
The doc, which is directed by Jessie Deeter, who produced HBO’s Elizabeth Holmes docuseries The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley and is working on a film about Elon Musk for the WBD network, is to get a theatrical run later this year via Abramorama, which has partnered with Alex Lieberman’s Bright West Entertainment.
The deal comes ahead of the Eventing competition at the Olympics kicking off on Saturday July 27 and running through July 29. Deeter will host screenings in Paris during the games starting on Friday July 26. It will also be available on Peacock as well as GATHR.
Eventing, often referred to as the triathlon of horse sports, combines dressage, show jumping, and cross-country into a single event. Originally developed from cavalry training exercises, it remains one of the few Olympic sports where men and women compete against each other on an equal footing for the same gold medal.
Despite being an Olympic sport since 1912, no woman had won the Individual Gold medal in Eventing since women were first allowed to compete in 1964 in Tokyo. Hoof Dreams follows three female equestrians – Julia Krajewski, Lauren Billys and Tamra Smith – as they look to shatter the sport’s glass ceiling.
The 90-minute doc comes from Bright West Entertainment and CoverStory Films. Ruth Sigal, Karol Martesko-Fenster and Gary Lieberman are exec producers, Rob Peterson and Alex Lieberman produce.
Jessie Deeter said, “Despite being a lifelong equestrian competitor, I have avoided making a film about horses until now. After a serious accident forced me to take a break from competing, I began to see the sport of Eventing in a larger context, recognizing its unique gender parity and the profound stories of resilience it holds.”
Abramorama CEO Karol Martesko-Fenster added, “Jessie’s film highlights the incredible achievements of female athletes in Eventing and underscores the importance of gender equality in sports and is a real treat to experience on the large screen.”
Bright West Entertainment founder Alex Lieberman said, “Hoof Dreams is a testament to the perseverance and passion of our featured female athletes. We are excited to partner with Abramorama to bring this incredible story to audiences across North America.”
