NEW DELHI: AAP MLA and chairman of Delhi Waqf Board, Amanatullah Khan, has moved to the Supreme Court challenging the controversial Waqf (Amendment) Bill 2025. He said that the bill “curtails the religious and cultural autonomy of Muslims, enables arbitrary executive interference, and undermines minority rights to manage their religious and charitable institutions.”
The Centre-backed bill drew criticism from members of INDIA bloc, who protested it. However, central government emphasised that the bill “establishes a secular, transparent, and accountable system for Waqf administration.”
BJP government asserted that the bill “sets a progressive and fair framework for Waqf administration in India.”
Parliament approved that bill on Friday after the Upper House gave its nod following an over 13-hour debate. 128 members voted in favour of the bill, while 95 opposed it in Rajya Sabha. Earlier on Thursday, Lok Sabha passed the bill with 288 members supporting it and 232 against it.
