The Afghan embassy in Islamabad issued a warning on Wednesday that the nation intends to expel all Afghan refugees.
Afghan nationals in Islamabad and the neighboring garrison city of Rawalpindi have been the target of arrests and searches, the embassy said in the sharply worded statement.
They have also been ordered by the Pakistan police to leave the two cities and settle in other parts of the nation.
“This process of detaining Afghans, which began without any formal announcement, has not been officially communicated to the Embassy of Afghanistan in Islamabad through any formal correspondence,” it added.
In addition to the hundreds of thousands of people who are illegally residing in Pakistan, the UNHCR has approximately 1.45 million Afghan citizens listed as refugees.
