Anupamaa actress Rupali Ganguly has been under public scrutiny after her stepdaughter, Esha Verma, accused her of breaking up her parents’ marriage. Esha, the daughter of Rupali’s husband, Ashwin K Verma, from his second marriage, alleged that Rupali “mentally, emotionally, and physically” abused both her and her mother. The controversy began when a 2020 post by Esha resurfaced online, leading her to reiterate these claims in new social media posts.
What Sparked the Controversy?
In the resurfaced post, Esha alleged that Rupali had an affair with Ashwin while he was still married to her mother. Esha went on to accuse Rupali of being “controlling” and “abusive”, alleging that the actress made death threats toward both her and her mother.
The resurfaced post from Esha has brought the family’s private issues into the public eye, leading Ashwin to issue a statement addressing the matter on X (formerly Twitter).
Allegations by Esha Verma
In her 2020 post, Esha accused Rupali of disrupting her family. She claimed that Rupali’s relationship with Ashwin began during his second marriage and ultimately led to its dissolution. Esha also alleged that Rupali manipulated Ashwin and prevented Esha from maintaining a relationship with her father. “Whenever I try to call my father, she [Rupali] starts yelling and screaming death threats to myself and my mother,” Esha wrote in the post, which has now gone viral again.
Esha also compared Rupali’s alleged behaviour to that of Rhea Chakraborty’s in the Sushant Singh Rajput case, claiming Rupali “feeds my dad strange medications and is very controlling of his life”​
Ashwin Verma’s Response: ‘Divorce is Difficult for Kids’
Ashwin K Verma, Rupali’s husband, addressed the allegations on X, expressing empathy for his daughter’s struggles while clarifying his side of the story. He acknowledged the emotional impact that divorce can have on children but stated that the separation from his second wife was due to private issues between them, unrelated to Rupali.
In his statement, Ashwin wrote, “I do have two daughters from previous relationships… But marriages end for many reasons, and my relationship with my second wife had multiple challenges.” He added that he cares deeply about all his children and regrets the negative attention the situation has attracted​.
Esha’s Recent Statements: ‘No Relationship With Rupali’
In a recent interview with Hindustan Times, Esha reiterated her earlier claims, confirming that she stands by everything she posted in 2020. Esha also made it clear that she has no relationship with Rupali beyond recognising her as the mother of her younger stepbrother. “Not really, there’s no relationship between the two of us. She’s just the mother of my brother, and that’s about it,” Esha shared.

Esha addressed the discrepancy between her claims and a seemingly happy family photo she posted on her Instagram account in 2021, where she is seen smiling with her father and Rupali.
