Abhay Deol opens up on experiencing violence in his past relationships and idea of marriage: 'I'd rather be single than miserable'

Abhay Deol has always come across as unconventional – be it his film choices or sometimes also how he is as a person. But the actor comes across as quite vocal and honest about his opinions. In a recent interview, Abhay shared his thoughts on marriage and relationships. He also spoke about experiencing emotions and sometimes violence in relationships.
The ‘Dev D’ actor said that two partners should be on the same page. He told Humans Of Bombay, “I don’t believe in violence and I have had a lot of drama in some of my past relationships. They have turned violent as well, emotional mainly. And that’s not good, not for my partner and not good for me. Not pointing fingers at anyone, it’s a learning curve.”
Abhay also revealed he was in a relationship with a narcissist and how it was for him. “In retrospect, you see that was kind of very unemotional and scheming,” he said. However, he’s also had some good relationships apart from some bad ones. “I’ve had partners where I have had great support, I have been the wrong one,” he said.
Talking about his idea of marriage, Abhay said, “In nature, you love, you don’t love, no one is judging you for having more than one partner, or you can partner up and stay with that partner for life, you can end up single and finding your own self because you are able to be by yourself and know who you are. I’d rather be single and lonely than coupled up and miserable.”
In the same interview, Abhay had spoken about how he found it difficult to deal with fame and hence had moved to New York before the release of ‘Dev D’. He said, “When I went there, I knew it wasn’t going to be forever because I was just indulging. I was very destructive. Some actors take their work home. It’s a process to learn how not to be affected. I am not now. I don’t take my work home. You should just embrace the privilege of being an actor and stop taking yourself so seriously. But, that didn’t happen at the end of that year. If anything, I got more and more destructive as the year progressed.”
He revealed that he spent time in New York, like his character from Dev D. Hence, it was self-destructive. Abhay said, “I knew I wasn’t going to stay there. I was just in New York playing the part I played in Dev D, getting drunk, not working and being terrible with my money. It was a waste in that sense. I won’t call it a waste now because I learnt something, but it was destructive. I wanted to come back home and continue to earn and support myself and my family. There are responsibilities, you have to come back. This is a make believe world. I knew it wasn’t going to be permanent, it was a temporary escape.”
