Legendary actor Gene Hackman and his wife, classical pianist Betsy Arakawa, were found dead in their Santa Fe, New Mexico residence yesterday ( February 26). Now, Hackman’s eldest daughter, Elizabeth Jean Hackman, suspects that her father, his wife, and their pet dog died due to carbon monoxide poisoning.
Hackman’s eldest daughter, Elizabeth Jean Hackman, reportedly told TMZ about the family’s concerns regarding the cause of their deaths. They believe carbon monoxide poisoning might be responsible for the demise of her father, his wife and their dog. Officials have not yet determined whether a gas leak or another source of toxic fumes contributed to the tragic event.

The Oscar-winning actor, who retired from Hollywood in 2004, had been living a quiet life dedicated to painting and spending time with his wife. The couple had largely stayed away from the public eye.
Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza confirmed to media outlets that the investigation remains open, as the exact cause of death has not yet been determined. According to him, the bodies had been there for at least a day, and authorities have not ruled out any possible cause of death. While no signs of visible trauma were found, investigators are considering multiple possibilities, including accidental poisoning, natural causes, or even foul play.
Officials secured a search warrant for the residence, allowing emergency services, including the fire department and gas company, to inspect the home for potential hazards. According to reports, two of the couple’s dogs were found alive inside the house, deepening the mystery surrounding their deaths.
