June WPI inflation turns negative at -0.13%; deflation in vegetables stands at -22.65%

India’s Wholesale Price Index (WPI) inflation for the month of June declined to (-) 0.13%. The dip was due to deflation observed in food articles and fuel sectors, whilst manufactured products exhibited reduced costs, as per official data released on Monday.The WPI inflation had registered at 0.39 per cent in May, whilst it stood at 3.43 per cent in June last year.“Negative rate of inflation in June, 2025 is primarily due to decrease in prices of food articles, mineral oils, manufacture of basic metals, crude petroleum & natural gas etc,” said the industry ministry in its official communication according to a PTI report.

June 2025 WPI inflation in numbers

  • According to WPI figures, food articles experienced a deflation of 3.75 per cent in June, compared to a deflation of 1.56 per cent in May, with vegetables recording a substantial decline.
  • Vegetables witnessed a significant deflation of 22.65 per cent in June, up from 21.62 per cent in May.
  • For manufactured products, the inflation rate stood at 1.97 per cent, slightly lower than May’s 2.04 per cent.
  • The fuel and power sector registered a negative inflation or deflation of 2.65 pc in June, showing a deeper decline from May’s deflation of 2.27 pc.
  • Fuel and power experienced a deflation rate of 2.65 pc in June, in contrast to 2.27 pc deflation recorded in May.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) primarily considers retail inflation whilst finalizing its monetary policy decisions.The June retail inflation figures are due to be released later today.The RBI reduced the benchmark policy interest rates significantly by 0.50 per cent to 5.50 per cent last month, considering the declining inflation trends.
