Pope Francis had a calm night in the hospital, the Vatican said on Sunday, following reports that the 88-year-old is in critical condition.
“The night passed peacefully, the pope rested,” the Holy See said in a brief statement. The Vatican did not provide details on whether he was awake or had eaten.
The Vatican confirmed on Saturday that Pope Francis had experienced a respiratory attack and required blood transfusions. He was diagnosed with pneumonia and a complex lung infection.
According to medical reports, the pope suffered a prolonged asthmatic respiratory crisis on Saturday morning while receiving treatment. Due to his condition, doctors provided “high flows” of oxygen to assist with breathing. He also received blood transfusions after tests indicated low platelet levels, which are necessary for clotting.
Despite his condition, the Vatican said the pope “continues to be alert and spent the day in an armchair although in more pain than yesterday.” Doctors described his prognosis as “reserved.”
Doctors have said that Pope Francis remains in a critical condition due to his age, existing lung issues, and overall frailty. They have identified the main risk as the possibility of the infection entering his bloodstream, which could lead to sepsis.
The Vatican has not provided further updates on his treatment or condition.
