NEW DELHI: Ahmedabad’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport flight operations have been temporarily suspended after an Air India Boeing 787 Dreamliner crashed shortly after takeoff on Thursday afternoon. The airport is currently non-operational, and all flights are halted until further notice.This follows after an Air India plane bound for London, plunged into the Meghani area of the city, sending up a massive plume of black smoke and triggering an immediate emergency response.The Boeing aircraft destined for London with 242 people aboard crashed shortly after departing from Ahmedabad airport on Thursday afternoon, with numerous fatalities anticipated. It plummeted rapidly and crashed in Meghaninagar locality near Ahmedabad international airport at approximately 2 pm.“Flight AI171, operating Ahmedabad-London Gatwick, was involved in an incident today, 12 June 2025. At this moment, we are ascertaining the details and will share further updates at the earliest on our X handle,” Air India posted on X.The injured passengers were transported to the city civil hospital for treatment. Dense black smoke was visible from considerable distances. Television crews who reached the crash site broadcast footage of the aircraft debris.Emergency services arrived swiftly at the location and initiated comprehensive rescue, evacuation, and fire control measures.“We are acquiring details about the casualties,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police, Kanan Desai.Fire officer Jayesh Khadia confirmed that fire engines were dispatched immediately to extinguish the flames.
