Congress slams Centre, demands PM Modi-Trump talks

NEW DELHI: As the video of an Indian student being handcuffed and pinned to the floor by US authorities surfaces, Congress on Tuesday slammed PM Modi for maintaining silence over the atrocities against Indians in America. Congress general secretary in-charge of communications, Jairam Ramesh, lashed out at the BJP government and said that it is continuously failing to protect the honour of India and Indians. Several Congress leaders shared the video of the Indian student who was handcuffed and pinned to the floor at US’s Newark airport. The student was then deported by the US authorities.‘We are in touch with local authorities,’ says Indian consulate in NY Meanwhile, the Indian consulate general of India in New York assured that it is in touch with the local authorities after the video went viral. “We have come across social media posts claiming that an Indian national is facing difficulties at Newark Liberty International Airport. We are in touch with local authorities in this regard,” the Indian consulate said in a post on X.‘Or it should be assumed that PM Modi is unable to muster the courage to speak’Taking to X, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh again targeted the BJP government over US President Donald Trump’s claim of mediating between India and Pakistan. He said that Trump declared a ceasefire between the two countries in India’s absence. “For the first time in history, a foreign head of state has declared ceasefire between India and Pakistan in India’s absence. US President Trump is continuously claiming to have ensured a ceasefire by pressuring India,” he said in his post in Hindi. He then launched a sharp attack on PM Modi, saying that Indian citizens and students in the US are being “repeatedly mistrated” for the past one year, but the prime minister “is maintaining silence.” “Or it should be assumed that he is unable to muster the courage to speak,” he added. The Congress leader further demanded that PM Modi should immediately talk to Trump and appeal for intervention on the mistreatment and atrocities being committed against Indians in America.Congress’ media and publicity department head Pawan Khera, while tagging a post by an Indian-American social entrepreneur Kunal Jain, said, “This is too painful, too humiliating and too distressing to watch. As a country, why should we tolerate this humiliation?”“From the days where we showed the muscle to the US during the Devyani Khobragade issue to now seeing our citizens being treated like animals, do we have no goodwill left in the world?” he added.
