NMC orders suspension of 26 MBBS students for NEET-2024 malpractices

NEW DELHI: The National Medical Commission (NMC) has directed immediate suspension of 26 MBBS students found complicit in NEET-UG 2024 malpractices while admission of 14 students for academic year 2024-25 has been cancelled for adopting unfair means for the entrance exam. The action by NMC comes ahead of the NEET-UG 2025 exam scheduled for Sunday.
Sources said the action against the students has been initiated based on the findings of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which is investigating the cases related to NEET UG 2024 examination. “Given the severity of these violations and their potential to undermine the credibility of the medical education system, the NMC has issued directives to the concerned medical colleges and institutions to immediately suspend the 26 MBBS students found to be complicit,” said a source.

Medical students’ misconduct a threat to public trust: Official

Further, the source added, admission of 14 more students for AY 2024-25 have been cancelled, who were found involved in unfair practices during NEET UG 2024 examination. Such misconduct not only compromises the sanctity of the examination process but also poses a direct threat to the standards of medical education and public trust, an NMC official said.
The NEET-UG exam 2024, which is conducted to determine eligibility for undergraduate medical programmes, was mired in controversy due to an alleged paper leak. There are approximately 1.20 lakh undergraduate medical seats across the govt and private medical colleges in the country. Last year, more than 23 lakh students appeared for the NEET-UG exam that was held on May 5. The results of the exam were declared on June 4. It was found that as many as 67 students had scored a perfect score of 720 marks which was suspicious as only a few students were able to get the perfect score in previous years – leading to a huge controversy and investigation
