Unprovoked firing by Pakistan continues for seventh straight day; India retaliates

NEW DELHI: Pakistani forces opened fire across the Line of Control (LoC) for a seventh straight day, the Indian Army said on Thursday, adding that own troops gave a proportionate response to the ceasefire violation.
“During the night of 30 April-1 May, Pakistan Army posts initiated unprovoked small-arms fire across the LoC opposite Kupwara, Uri and Akhnoor in the Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir. These were responded proportionately,” news agency ANI quoted Indian Army officials as saying.
The ceasefire violation occurred despite Directors General of Military Operations (DGMO) of India and Pakistan talking over the hotline on Wednesday to discuss the continuous unprovoked violations by Pakistan.
The Indian DGMO reportedly warned his Pakistani counterpart against violations by the Pakistan Army along the LOC and the International Border.
On April 22, Pakistan-backed terrorists gunned down 26 male tourists in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam. India has vowed to locate and punish perpetrators of the horrific attack.
It has also taken a raft of measures against Pakistan for support to cross-border terrorism, including holding the Indus Water Treaty in abeyance and closing the Integrated Check Post at Attari. India has also decided to curtail the strength of its High Commissions in Islamabad and revoked visas of Pakistani nationals living in India and sent them to their country.
The government has given armed forces complete operational freedom to decide on the response to the Pahalgam terrorist attack.
