Trump takes jibe at 'Governor' Trudeau while hyping US to beat ‘51st state’ Canada in hockey final

US President Donald Trump again stirred the controversial pot before a hockey clash Thursday between the America and Canada, using the occasion to revive his offer of making America’s northern neighbor the 51st state.
The USA and Canada will play for the championship of the 4 Nations Face-Off on Thursday (February 20) night in Boston.
While wishing the Hockey team victory, Trump didn’t missed a chance to tease Trudeau again. He said that Canada with far lower taxes and much stronger security will someday become the US 51st state. He also called Trudeau “Governor.”
“I’ll be calling our GREAT American Hockey Team this morning to spur them on towards victory tonight against Canada, which with FAR LOWER TAXES AND MUCH STRONGER SECURITY, will someday, maybe soon, become our cherished, and very important, Fifty First State. I will be speaking before the Governors tonight in D.C., and will sadly, therefore, be unable to attend,” he said on a post on Truth Social.

” But we will all be watching, and if Governor Trudeau would like to join us, he would be most welcome. Good luck to everybody, and have a GREAT game tonight. So exciting! PRESIDENT DONALD J. TRUMP,” he added.
President Donald Trump has repeatedly said Canada should be the 51st US state as he proposes to erase the 5,525-mile-long border that separates the two countries.
On February 7, 2025, during a private meeting with business and labour leaders, Trudeau disclosed that Trump’s proposition to make Canada the 51st U.S. state was “a real thing”, linking it to access to the nation’s natural resources.
“Mr. Trump has it in mind that the easiest way to do it is absorbing our country and it is a real thing. In my conversations with him on …,” Mr. Trudeau stated, as reported by CBC, Canada’s public broadcaster. “They’re very aware of our resources of what we have, and they very much want to be able to benefit from those.”
On February 9, 2025, whilst travelling to the Super Bowl in New Orleans, Mr. Trump, speaking from Air Force One, continued his aggressive stance towards one of America’s longest-standing allies. He asserted Canada’s non-viability without U.S. trade and cautioned that the NATO founding member should not rely on U.S. military support.
“You know, they don’t pay very much for military. And the reason they don’t pay much is they assume that we’re going to protect them,” he stated. “That’s not an assumption they can make because — why are we protecting another country?”
