'What is riot about?': West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee refuses to implement Waqf in state amid violent protests

NEW DELHI: West Bengal would not implement the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025, brought by the central government, state chief minister Mamata Banerjee said on Saturday. This came after certain regions in the state, including areas of Jangipur, Murshidabad district witnessed violent protests against the law.
“We have made our position clear on this matter – we do not support this law. This law will not be implemented in our state. So what is the riot about?” Banerjee questioned.
She further appealed to the protestors to maintain peace and harmony in the state and reminded them that the law was not brought by the West Bengal government.
“My sincere appeal to all people of all religions, please remain calm, remain restrained. Do not engage in any unrighteous behavior in the name of religion. Every human life is precious, do not incite riots for the sake of politics. Those who are inciting riots are harming the society. Remember, we did not make the law that many are agitated against. The law was made by the central government. So the answer you want should be sought from the central government,” she said.
“Also, remember, we will take legal action against those who incite riots. We do not condone any violent activity. Some political parties are trying to misuse religion for political gain. Do not give in to their persuasion. I think religion means humanity, goodwill, civilization and harmony. I appeal to everyone to maintain peace and harmony,” she added.
The Act came in effect starting April 8 after it was passed following the rejection of all amendments proposed by opposition members through voice votes. It was approved by a vote count of 288 in favor and 232 against.
The BJP-led government asserts that the Act will enhance the administration and management of Waqf properties across the country. However, the opposition has criticized it as a “targeted legislation” and argued that it is “fundamentally in violation of Constitutional provisions.”
The objective is to amend the Waqf Act, 1995, to tackle issues related to the regulation and supervision of Waqf properties. The suggested changes are intended to improve administration and ensure more efficient management of Waqf assets throughout India.
