NEW DELHI: On the second day of the national convention, the Congress party will hold its All India Congress Committee (AICC) session on Wednesday on the banks of the Sabarmati River in Ahmedabad. During the session, the party will present its social, political, and economic views through at least two resolutions. The event is named “Nyaypath: Sankalp, Samarpan aur Sangharsh” and will be attended by more than 1,700 elected and co-opted AICC members. The main session will take place between the Sabarmati Ashram and the Kochrab Ashram.
Ahmedabad has been hosting the 84th National Convention of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) on April 8–9. This is the first time in 64 years that the event is being held in Gujarat.
Congress general secretary in charge of communications, Jairam Ramesh, said on Tuesday that the Constitution’s Preamble talks about social, political, and economic justice, and the resolutions will reflect the Congress party’s stand on these areas.
He added that one resolution focused on Gujarat and another on national issues was discussed in the Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting on Tuesday. Both will be considered for approval at the AICC session.
The day will begin with flag hoisting, where Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge will hoist the flag along with members of the extended CWC. After that, he will deliver the presidential address, and the resolutions will be introduced for discussion.
Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson Sonia Gandhi and former Congress president Rahul Gandhi will also speak at the session. The meeting will conclude around 5:30 pm.
This session follows a meeting of the extended CWC on Tuesday, where members finalized the agenda and discussed the proposed resolutions in detail.
Responding to the BJP’s efforts to use nationalist figures for political support, the Congress said it is committed to the legacy of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. In a resolution titled “Flag-bearer of freedom movement – Our ‘Sardar’ Vallabhbhai Patel,” the Congress said its leadership had gathered in Ahmedabad, the land of Mahatma Gandhi and Patel, to shape a new direction for India.
The resolution also underlined Patel’s role in the freedom movement and accused the BJP of trying to take over his legacy through what it called a “well-planned conspiracy.”
