Wedding turns ugly over Joota Chupai: Groom beaten up by Bride's family- Here's what happened

A wedding ceremony in Uttra Pradesh’s Bijnor took a drastic turn when a dispute over the tradition of “Joota Chupai” led to the groom being thrashed by the bride’s family over a simple mistake of giving Rs 5,000 instead of Rs 50,000 upon asking. The groom was called a “Beggar” in front of hundreds of guests.
Reportedly, the groom was locked in a room and beaten with sticks. The groom, Muhammad Shabbir, resident of Chakrata, Uttarakhand, arrived at his wedding on April 5 2025. During the infamous ritual of Joota Chupai, the bride’s side of the family hides the groom’s shoes and demands money in return.
However, this ritual took a violent turn instantly. When asked, the groom offered Rs 5,000 only instead of the requested amount, which was Rs 50,000.
An argument broke out between the families as some women from the bride’s side started to call the groom’s side beggars.
Conversely, the bride’s family claimed that the altercation began when Shabir’s family questioned the quality of gold gifts that they had received, accusing them of prioritising money over the bride. Quickly, the police were involved in this matter; the team reached the spot immediately and tried to pacify both parties. Both parties went to the Najibabad police station, where the whole scenario was explained to the police.
According to the police, both the bride and the groom’s family settled after being called to voice their concerns in front of the police.
