Cricket fans in India and Pakistan are eagerly awaiting February 23, when the two cricket rivals will face each other in the Champions Trophy 2025 in Dubai. This highly anticipated match is considered one of cricket’s greatest rivalries, surpassing even the historic Ashes series.
The Champions Trophy 2025 was initially planned to be held entirely in Pakistan. However, after BCCI’s refusal to send the Indian team to Pakistan, a hybrid model was adopted where India will play all their matches in Dubai.

This decision has sparked disappointment among Pakistani cricket supporters. During a pre-match discussion, cricket legend Shahid Afridi shared his thoughts on modern players and the lack of aggression in the current rivalry.
“Aaj kal ke players sab McDonalds, KFC wale hai (Today’s players are Mcdonalds, KFC generation),” Afridi said.

Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif recently addressed the significance of the upcoming match during the inauguration of the renovated Gaddafi Stadium.
“We have a very good side and they have done well in recent times but the real task now is to not only win the Champions Trophy but also defeat our arch-rival, India in the upcoming match in Dubai. The entire nation stands behind them,” Sharif said.

The cricket rivalry between India and Pakistan has historically favoured India in ICC events since the 1990s. Pakistan’s most recent victory against India in an ICC event was during the 2021 T20 World Cup in Dubai.
The upcoming match has gained additional significance due to India’s decision not to play in Pakistan and the current tensions between the two cricket boards.
Pakistan enters the tournament as the defending champions, having won the last Champions Trophy in England in 2017. This marks Pakistan’s first opportunity to host a major ICC event in nearly three decades.
“It is a big occasion for Pakistan that we are hosting a big ICC event after nearly 29 years,” Sharif expressed during the stadium inauguration.
